Weekend Round-Up: 15-16 September
Three Heanor RC runners competed in the BUPA Great North Run on Sunday and all three returned home from the damp north east with personal bests to show for their efforts. There were also a host of Heanor RC members in action across the country, including victories at the Ashbourne Half Marathon and New Forest 10k.
Whilst Kenenisa Bekele was just about managing to fend off the late challenge from Mo Farah at the front, Carl Hughes, Abbie Leivers and Rose Leivers were on their way to the South Shields finish from Gateshead along with 40,000 others.
Despite the wind and rainy conditions, Carl put all his recent training and races to the best of use with a PB by over ninety seconds. Carl, with a 1:26.55 best from the Paris Half Marathon earlier this year, knocked almost five minutes off his time from the GNR last year to finish 428th in 1:25.21.
Sisters Abbie and Rose ran together and helped each other round to massive new best times. Rose had a PB coming into the race of 1:47.22 from last year’s Robin Hood Half Marathon and went on to take almost three minutes off that time to finish in 1:44.36. Abbie, who joined the club earlier this year, finished a stride behind in 1:44.37 and was understandably emotional and delighted with her efforts afterwards.
A little closer to home and Dale Annable competed in the Ashbourne Half Marathon. The notoriously hilly and testing course was no match for Dale, who continued his recent good form to win comfortably in 1:15.35.
Mark Powell was in equally dominant form at the National Forest 10k in Leicestershire. Mark was a minute behind Tim Hartley’s course record but won the race untroubled and by a huge margin of almost three and a half minutes in 33:26.
In multi-event action, Darren Ridout and Alastair Hobday – in his first ever triathlon – competed in the Derby Triathlon whilst Sarah Fullaway followed in the recently-crowned World champion Non Stanford’s footsteps and put down a good marker at the London Triathlon at Hyde Park.
The Winfield family were in action representing HRC at the Golden Gates Gallop 5 Mile & 2 Mile Fun Run at Elvaston Castle. Taking part in the fun run, Lily finished an impressive fourth overall – and second female – in 14:49 as younger sister Phoebe crossed the line 21st (6th female) in 20:36. In the main 5 mile event, Paul Winfield ran well to finish inside the top-20, completing the distance in 35:56.
Two more Heanor RC juniors were in action on the track at the Derby Athletics Festival at Moorways Stadium, Derby. In miserable conditions, thirteen year old Danielle Smith ran a new PB over 200m, stopping the clock at 28.8 for third place. Emily Deeming went in the 800m and equalled Danielle’s third place position and crossed the line in 2:48 (awaiting official results).
