Weekend Round-Up: 25-27 May
Danielle Smith, Lily Winfield and her sister Phoebe represented Heanor RC impressively in warm and favorable conditions at the Derbyshire Track & Field Championships.
Following the change of venue to Harvey Hadden , Nottingham due to ongoing refurbishment of Moorways, the junior girls competed across the younger categories, winning medals and setting personal bests across the weekend.
Danielle finished narrowly outside the medals in the 800m on day one but went away with a huge personal best. The thirteen year old, with another year in the U15 age category, finished fourth in 2:26.34, a time that would have seen her win gold in the U17 category. Danielle followed this up with a silver medal in the 1500m, taking two seconds off her best to run 5:07.24.
Lily Winfield enjoyed a highly successful debut championships, going away with bronze medals in both middle distance events. Lily, only recently recovered from injury, finished a clear third on Saturday in the U13 800m, clocking a new PB of 2:38.08. Lily smashed her PB in the 1500m the following day, taking eleven seconds off her previous best to finish third again in 5:18.24.
In the quad kids event, Phoebe Winfield put in a great effort over three disciplines. Phoebe jumped three centimetres further than at the Derbyshire Mini League last weekend, jumping out to 2.80m; her javelin throw measured 17.83m and Phoebe finished the day with 2:32 in the 600m, six seconds quicker than her time at Spinkhill the previous weekend.
Dale Annable won his first race in the yellow and blue of Heanor RC. Dale, who finished second two weeks ago at the Blackpool 10k, took on the challenging Buxton Half Marathon and won out by over two minutes in a time of 1:16.58.
Carl Hughes, with a PB of 1:26.55 from earlier this year in Paris, finished a cool 45th in Buxton in 1:37.42. Rose Leivers was just over the two hour mark in a symmetrical 2:00.02.
Adrian Smith admitted to be slightly disappointed with his result from the Edinburgh Marathon on Sunday. Adrian, with a 3:33.57 best set in Leicester last October, clocked 3:44.59 in the Scottish capital.
Eleven Heanor RC runners lined up alongside double-Olympic champion Mo Farah in the Bupa London 10,000. Farah won the race over a completely domestic field by almost a minute in 29:13.
Supported from the sidelines, Chris Rainsford was Heanor RC’s fastest performer. Chris ran to form to finish inside the top-50 in 32:21. Joe Rainsford (33:23) banished the demons of the previous year to continue his good recent 10k form. Shane Rice, in his 10k debut and fresh from a ultra race just eight days before, clocked 36:17 to see the trio place well overall in the UK team championships (still awaiting official results).
Lisa Palmer led a strong female team home. Lisa, 3rd in the recent BDL, finished 31st female in her fastest 10k since 2010 in 37:37. Louise Insley wasn’t too far behind as she obliterated her personal best by over two minutes to clock 38:10. Jill Burke bettered her time from last month’s Derby 10k by over a minute to finish 10th veteran in 41:25.
Tony Weatherson (38:19) left London disappointed with his run whilst Paul Mercer was just over twenty seconds shy of his best in 42:05. Gemma Housley (53:18) and Lizzie Poole (still awaiting result) also competed and enjoyed the perfect bank holiday conditions in the capital.
