Weekend Round-Up: 5-6 October
Lisa Palmer and Mark Powell made it a Heanor RC double-victory at the Shelton Striders 10k as seven other members picked up all-important club championship points with only two fixtures of the 2013 season remaining.
The perfect autumn conditions in Shelton lent themselves to some good times as Mark Powell set off with intent and had the race in the bag before halfway. Mark, second last year, slowed in the second half but won out by over a minute in 33:07.
Lisa Palmer enjoyed a similarly comfortable victory in the women’s event. Lisa came out on top for the second year running in a time of 37:13, crossing the line over a minute quicker than her 2012 winning mark and showing good form ahead of the Valencia Half Marathon in two weeks’ time.
Alastair Hobday (39:55) picked up maximum veteran club championship points as Jill Burke (41:44) won the V50 category once more with a well-judged negative split race.
Paul Mercer (42:19) ran his third fastest 10k time of the year whilst Ed Godber (44:08), Paul Winfield (44:39), Sarah Fullaway (47:53) – in her first ever 10k – and Jo Potter (49:39) rounded off the team’s efforts.
In the fun run following the main event, Lily and Phoebe Winfield were joined by HRC debutant Dylan George & all three put in promising performances.
Lily showed her growing potential once more to finish first girl (and a close second overall) whilst Dylan closely followed in third. Phoebe finished well to complete the trio’s strong showing.
Over at the Goose Fair Gallop 10k in Kimberley, Nottinghamshire, Dale Annable made it two local 10k victories out of two for the yellow and blue. Dale headed an otherwise Long Eaton RC top-5, and completed the testing course in 33:13 – just six seconds off Tom Mahon’s 2012 course record.
Lee Perkins and Mark Morgan were in action at the Carsington Duathlon. Lee completed the first 5k run in 17:45, the 30k bike in 52:15 and second and final 5k in 20:09 to finish 37th as Mark Morgan romped home to 1st place after 1:18:25 of competition.
Twenty four hours before and Matt Bickerstaff got the weekend off to a successful start with victory at the No Walk in the Park 5k in Chesterfield. Birthday-boy Matt, with a recent sub-16 5k PB behind him from the September Derby Midweek 5k, won out in a swift 16:03.
Lizzie Poole was also in action on Saturday in the Clumber Park 10k in Nottinghamshire, clocking a handy 46:51.
