Weekend Round-Up: 8-9 March
With the cross country campaign drawing to a close and spring sunshine ushering in the road race season, Heanor RC were busy yellow and blue bees in races across the country at the weekend.
Two weeks on from the English National XC Championships, Lily Winfield, Danielle Smith, Emily Deeming James Mee and Stuart King put their cross country seasons to bed at the Inter-Counties Cross Country in Birmingham.
The annual event features only the best athletes in the country, with the top-8 from each county selected off the back of their county championship performance back in January.
In the Derbyshire colours on Saturday, Lily finished 91st over 3k in the U13G race whilst Danielle placed 170th and Emily 225th in the U15G age category. James Mee and Stuart King put in solid performances in the green of Nottinghamshire in the senior men’s event, crossing the line 56th and 113th respectively.
With the London Marathon now just over four weeks away, preparations were stepped up a notch for Carl Hughes and Rose Leivers at the Ashby 20 on Sunday.
Coming off the back of the Stamford 30k last month, the pair showed they are on course to reach their targets in the capital on 13th April as Carl clocked 2:18:05 and Rose 2:48:25 despite “hitting the wall”. Also in action over the rural and undulating course in Leicestershire were Ed Godber (2:32:04), Lizzie Poole (2:44:53), Brett Beeson (2:52:20) and Jo Potter (2:56:21).
At the Colwick parkrun, Rose’s sister Abbie knocked another twenty seconds off her 5k personal best. Abbie slashed two minutes off her best the previous weekend and lowered it further to 23:19, finishing 3rd female and 44th overall. Paul Harpham, in his first ever parkrun, finished third in 18:30.
One of HRC’s newest-recruits Scott Wigman ran 1:57:46 at the Retford Half Marathon.
